Red Devils beginning playoffs, ‘Hockey Day’ in Dresden, baseball scores

Red Devils battle Windsor tonight

The Wallaceburg Red Devils will be on the road this evening in Windsor for Game #1 of their best-of-five opening round series in the Ontario Junior ‘B’ Lacrosse League playoffs.

The ball drops at 8 p.m.

Wallaceburg (12-7-1) enters the playoffs at the 5th seed in the West Division, while Windsor (13-6-1) is the 4th seed.

The Clippers won the season series against Wallaceburg, with a 2-1-1 record in their four match-ups.

The Red Devils will be at home in Game #2 of the series. It will be held Sunday, June 25 at 4 p.m.

Here is the complete schedule for the opening round series:

– Game 1: Thursday, June 22, 2017 in Windsor – 8 p.m.

– Game 2: Sunday, June 25, 2017 at home – 4 p.m.

– Game 3: Wednesday, June 28, 2017 in Windsor – 8 p.m.

– Game 4 (if necessary): Saturday, July 1, 2017 at home – 4 p.m.

– Game 5 (if necessary): Sunday, July 2, 2017 in Windsor – 7 p.m.

Captain Cory Lucier led Wallaceburg with 73 points in 20 games this season. Lucier tallied 26 goals and added 47 assists.

Newcomer Sidney Powless actually scored 76 points this season in 23 total games. He had 31 goals and 28 assists for 59 points in 17 games with the Six Nations Rebels, and 12 goals and 5 assists for 17 points in six games with the Red Devils.

Tyler Brown nearly topped Lucier in the Devils scoring race, with 68 points in only 15 games. Brown recorded 31 goals and 37 assists during the regular season.

Veteran forward Evan Mathany, who is in his sixth and final season with Wallaceburg, also had 68 points this season. He scored 23 goals and added 45 assists in 20 games.

Hockey Day at Dresden Raceway

Even though it’s the middle of summer this Sunday afternoon June 25 will be about hockey at Dresden Raceway as the racetrack will be celebrating all the local hockey teams of Canada’s past time including a Dresden LumberKings reunion.

“We are inviting all hockey teams to come out… bring jerseys for pictures and enjoy a day at the track,” said track publicist Gary Patterson.

The LumberKings were a Sr. team that played in the 1970’s and 1980’s in Dresden and brought Championships home in 1980, 1983 and 1985.

Dresden Farm equipment were the sponsors of the LumberKings which explained the John Deere green and gold colours.

The LumberKings will be honoured on the track as well as Dresden Junior Kings player Dillon Liberty, who was named the OHA Junior ‘C’ Player of the year after putting up some huge numbers with the Dresden Junior Kings.

All hockey teams in part or in whole who are in attendance will be recognized.

“You never know who shows up at the track as several former hockey players and even some current players stop by the track from time-to-time,” added Patterson

Post time for the afternoon card of racing is set for 1:30 p.m.

Wallaceburg Minor Baseball scores – Wednesday, June 21

– The Wallaceburg Optimist Rookie RL Warriors fell to the PL Pirates 6-0.

– The CBD Girls u10 Fastball Warriors cut the Corunna Giants down to size 15-1.

– The Legion Branch 18 Ladies Auxiliary Girls u12 Fastball Warriors won their first game of the season 8-6 over the Wyoming Wranglers.

– The Stubby Goat Peewee OBA Warriors defeated the Alvinston Riverhawks 15-3.
