Remembrance Day a legal holiday, poll, Chatham bridge closure

Morning Coffee – By Aaron Hall

Remembrance Day is becoming a legal holiday

The House of Commons has passed legislation making Remembrance Day the same legal status as Canada Day and Victoria Day.

However, it is mostly a symbolic move, as the Federal government cannot make November 11 a statutory holiday across Canada.

This is because any changes made to the status would fall under provincial jurisdiction.

Remembrance Day is currently a holiday in every province and territory except for Ontario, Quebec and Nova Scotia.

Federal employees will get the day off.

Reports say the Royal Canadian Legion are worried about the move as it may change people’s attitudes and they may not bother making an effort to attend Remembrance Day ceremonies.

Here is some more information:

What do you think?

Should Remembrance Day be made a statutory holiday in Ontario?

The Fifth Street Bridge (over the Thames River) in Chatham will be closed to all vehicular and pedestrian traffic starting Thursday June 29, 2017 until December 22, 2017 for rehabilitation.

The rehabilitation project consists of removal of the existing Fifth Street Bridge superstructure, rehabilitation of both the abutments and centre piers, installation of new structural streel and concrete decking.

The structure will be reopened to the public this year with the balance of any remaining work being completed by June 29, 2018.

Work completed in 2018 may require some lane restriction which will be communicated at that time.
