Peewee Pirates win in dramatic fashion, Wallaceburg baseball scores

Peewee Pirates blast Dover Centre in dramatic finish

In Peewee Boys River League action on Wednesday June 28th the Port Lambton Pirates and the Dover Centre Dawgs put on the match of the season for fans gathered at MacDonald Park in Port Lambton.

Pirates starting pitcher Wade McLachlin came out solid and both teams battled hard in early innings to a 4-4 tie at the end of the 3rd in part thanks to consistent offence from Aaron Highfield and Chase Sitze among others.

The Dawgs bats got barking in the 4th inning and they posted two more runs to go up 6-4.

The inning closed with courageous Pirates pitching from Tim Eberts to get out of the inning with the Dawgs stranding three more on base. The Pirates answered back in the bottom of the 4th putting up three more runs to go ahead 7-6 on singles from Brodie Altiman, Tim Eberts and a triple from Brayden Krayenbrink.

The beginning of the dramatic finish started with the time clock.

Peewee Boys River League rules state no new inning can commence after 1 hr and 45 minutes from the time of the first pitch. With a 6:25 p.m. start time logged, the last Pirate’s batter of the 5th inning struck out one-minute under the wire at 8:09 p.m. And so, the Pirates took the field for another inning playing to keep the Dawgs down.

Despite excellent pitching from closer Jack Murphy and tremendous defensive support from the entire field, the Dawgs got off the leash, dug up two more runs, and found a way to take the lead 8-7.

Into the bottom of the last inning after two out the Pirates remained down a run.

That’s until Brayden Krayenbrink stepped up to the plate and homered with a solo shot deep to right-centre and tied the game 8-8.

Cameron Peats next kept hopes alive by reaching first base.

Marcus Boswell, who exited the field an inning earlier due to an injury at second base, was next to step into the box.

Boswell crushed what became a walk-off triple, scoring Peats and ending the game 9-8.

The Port Lambton Pirates remain undefeated on the season with an 8-0 record.
