Murder investigation underway in Belle River

Police have launched a murder investigation in Belle River, after an incident left an 18-year-old Windsor man dead on Thursday night.

OPP officials say on July 13 at approximately 9:50 p.m., the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to an altercation between several combatants in the vicinity of Cooper Crescent and Lenore Street in the town of Belle River.

As a result of the altercation, an 18-year-old Windsor male was fatally injured while several others have sustained undetermined injuries.

A 17-year-old Lakeshore male has been arrested in connection with this investigation.

Numerous assets from the OPP have been deployed to the area to further the ongoing investigation.

The Essex County OPP Crime Unit under the direction of Detective Inspector Gerry Scherer of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB) is heading up the investigation.

Though it appears the persons involved may be known to each other and not a random act, the OPP remind all citizens of the need to ensure their own safety by securing their homes and outbuildings, even when they are present.

OPP is at the early stages of this investigation and will provide more information as it becomes available.

In the meantime, OPP would like anyone with information to call police immediately, or should you wish to remain anonymous you may contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) where you may be eligible for a cash reward of up to $2,0000.
