Demolition order for fire ravaged home appealed

30 Hiram Street, Wallaceburg (Aaron Hall)

The potential demolition of a fire ravaged home on Hiram Street in Wallaceburg is being delayed.

Erin Merritt, a by-law enforcement officer with the Municipality of Chatham-Kent, told the Sydenham Current that the Municipality has received an appeal to the Order to Demolish issued earlier this month.

“We will be scheduling a hearing to hear the appeal as soon as possible,” Merritt said in an email.

“I believe the tentative date is August 15th, 2017.”

Merritt said she would advise the newspaper after the hearing what decision was made by the Property Standards Committee and what the Municipality’s next steps will be.

“I have called all the residents who have been in contact with me to advise them of this, and that there would be a delay until after the hearing was held,” she said.

Several neighbours in the area have contacted the Sydenham Current with complaints, ever since the fire at the 30 Hiram Street property on April 22.

Some of the complaints, included: knee-high grass, rotten food in the backyard, mattresses lying around and, most recently, the presence of rats in the neighbourhood.

The Sydenham Current reported previously that the Property Standards Committee will make a final decision, which could be to uphold, rescind, extend or modify the Order to Demolish.

Merritt said she then will have to wait 14 days to see if the decision is appealed to Superior court.
