Update: Drug trafficking charges laid following sudden death

The Sarnia Police Service have laid drug trafficking charges, following the sudden death on a man last week.

Police officials say on August 9, members of the Sarnia Police General Patrol and Criminal Investigations Division investigated the sudden death of a middle-aged male after he had consumed illicit drugs.

Police reported on Friday, that over the course of a five hour span on Wednesday, Lambton Paramedics, Sarnia Fire Fighters and the Sarnia Police Service dealt with three suspected drug overdoses in Sarnia.

One of the overdoses resulted in the death of an individual. The other two overdoses remained in hospital aas of Friday.

“From current information, the drug that was purchased was thought to be cocaine but it is now believed to have been laced with another substance, namely Fentanyl, a dangerous synthetic opioid,” Sarnia Police officials stated.

Police said on Saturday that the investigation led investigators to the identity of the alleged person who sold the illicit drugs to the male victim.

Police officials say on August 11, a Criminal Code search warrant was executed at the residence
of the alleged drug trafficker.

The accused was taken into custody for trafficking a substance contrary to section 5 (1) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act as well as possession of a controlled substance contrary to section 4 (1) of the Controlled Drug and Substances Act.

The investigation is ongoing.

“The Sarnia Police would like to remind members of the community that the consumption of unknown substances can lead to serious personal injury or death,” police officials stated.

“The Sarnia Police Service will continue to investigate all Drug Trafficking Cases thoroughly and
vigorously.”
