“It was fantastic,” Kevin Cavanagh, president of the Community Living Wallaceburg board of directors, told the Sydenham Current following the 13 km bike ride.

“Took us just about an hour and a half, not quite. Everything was just a big rolling party.”

Cavanagh and his team of volunteers were inspired by the ‘Slow Roll’ events, which are held each Monday in Detroit.

First Time Rider Orientation Day

A safety program for students from the Lambton-Kent District School Boardand the St. Clair Catholic District School Board is set to be held on Saturday, August 19.

As another school year begins, CLASS and the local school bus operators are preparing parents and first-time school bus riders from JK to Grade 1 in understanding the importance of school bus safety by hosting a First Time Rider Orientation Day on Saturday, August 19 from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at two separate locations simultaneously.

Parents are encouraged to bring their children to the FREE session, where school bus safety trainers will talk to the children about basic school bus safety rules, how to cross the street safely and how to evacuate a bus in case of an emergency.

The young riders will then board a bus and go for a short ride.

Rental housing review underway

Chatham-Kent officials are seeking public input on how the municipality views the future of different forms of rental residential housing in the community.

The Legislative Services Team has prepared an online survey https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/LodgingHouseRoomRental and will hold community meetings as it examines rental housing, room rentals, and boarding and lodging houses.

In conducting the review, Legislative Services is considering possible amendments to the provisions of the Zoning By-law which may impact these types of rental accommodations.

“An important part of this review is to consult widely with the public,” said Chatham-Kent Chief Legal Officer John Norton in a press release.

“To name just a few, I hope we will hear from many landlords, tenants, students, migrant workers and neighbours of rental properties. Opportunity for public comment will be through an online survey and two public meetings taking place in September 2017.”

The survey is online now and paper copies are available at all municipal service centres for those who don’t have Internet access.

The survey will be active until Sept. 15.

The public meetings will be held Wednesday Sept 6 in council chambers at the Civic Centre and Thursday, Sept. 7 at the RDC Pioneer Lecture Theatre, Ridgetown College.

Both session begin at 6 p.m. and are scheduled for two hours.
