Canada Homestay Network looking for new host families

The Canada Homestay Network, in partnership with the Lambton-Kent District School Board, is looking for new host families in the area.

“We are welcoming approximately 130 students into the LKDSB board in September from 24 countries,” said Karissa Quinlan, relationship manager with the Canada Homestay Network.

“Students come to study English but also learn about Canada. They come with the desire to become part of a family and learn about Canadian culture.

Quinlan said their organization knows many students in the Lambton-Kent District School Board may not get chances to travel.

“We know that the world is becoming smaller,” she said.

“Students today need to develop global competencies so we have been working to bring the globe to our classrooms. Our international students have shared with us that the area is extremely friendly and welcoming.”

Quinlan said Canada Homestay Network screens the host families and matches students with host families, according to preferences for both the students and the hosts.

“We ask that hosts have a private room with a bed, desk and dresser and have time to put into making this a great experience for both their family and the international student.

Quinlan said Canada Homestay Network pays $725 per month, per student.

“This is to cover the cost of three meals a day, plus the additional cost of having a student in your home,” she said.

“We offer 24/7 support and have local relationship managers available to assist the host and students along the way. We offer host information sessions as well as student and host events throughout the year.”
