Sombra Township Child Care celebrating 25 years

Sombra Township Child Care is set to celebrate 25 years serving the community.

A special event is set to take place on Sunday, September 10 at the Brander Park Splash Pad and Pavilion from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Carol Flanagan, the owner and brain child of Sombra Township Child Care, started in a tiny basement in Port Lambton United Church 25 years ago, said Ashley Corr, one of the event organizers.

“She has fought tooth and nail in a rural community through county funding, numerous fundraisers and love and support of the surrounding area to expand to three different sites,” Corr said.

Sombra Infant and Toddler, Riverview Central School, the hub with before and after school care and two preschool rooms and Ontario Early Years Center, and their Port Lambton Sacred Heart school site, which houses before and after school programs and a preschool room.

“Sombra Township Child Care has supported numerous families from Wallaceburg to Corunna, and every town along the way,” Corr said.

“We even have the very first children that have come to preschool 25 years ago complete the cycle and now bring their own children to our programs.”

Corr added: “In honor of Carol and 25 years being open we want to thank everyone in the community who has been involved with Sombra Township Child Care, either by coming as a child, supported anyone of our fundraisers, have children present or past in our programs and any workers past and present, as well as previous board members and council to come and help us celebrate.”

Light snacks and refreshments will be provided.

A recognition ceremony will take place at the pavilion at 2 p.m.
