The Chatham-Kent Health Alliance (CKHA) has announced four new physicians to the community – Dr. Thomas Burgess, Dr. Chameli Deb, Dr. Abu Ismail and Dr. Yung Lee.

Dr. Burgess has joined CKHA in the role of Palliative Care Specialist in the Department of Family Medicine.

He received his Bachelor of Medical Sciences from University College Cork in the Republic of Ireland and completed his post-graduate training in Family Medicine at Western University in Windsor. Following his Family Medicine training, Dr. Burgess completed the Palliative Care Enhanced Skills Program at Western University. Since December 2016, he has worked as part of the physician groups at both Chatham-Kent Hospice and The Hospice of Windsor and Essex County, providing high quality palliative care to patients through their end-of-life.

“Having worked with the team at Chatham-Kent’s Hospice, I’m very excited to have the opportunity to provide physician support to the excellent Palliative and Supportive Care team at CKHA,” Dr. Burgess stated in a press release.

“Effective symptom management, goals of care discussions, and development of care plans will all work to improve the quality of life for those patients with incurable, progressive illnesses.”

Dr. Chameli Deb joins CKHA in the role of Anaesthetist.

She completed a Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from North Bengal Medical College in India and her Doctor of Medicine (Anaesthesiology) from B.J. Medical College in India. In 2010, she became a Fellow of the College of Anaesthetists, Royal College of Surgeons Ireland. From 2012-2016, Dr. Deb completed a fellowship in Paediatric Anaesthesia at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario in Ottawa, a fellowship in Ambulatory Anaesthesia at Toronto Western Hospital and an Advanced Clinical Fellowship with Obstetric Coverage at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto.

Previously, she held the role of Senior Registrar in Anaesthesia at Ibn Sina Hospital, Ministry of Health, Kuwait. Dr. Deb has diverse experience in adult as well as paediatric anesthesia care, obstetric anesthesia, regional anesthesia, ambulatory anaesthesia, pain management, critical care and transport medicine.

Dr. Abu Ismail joins CKHA in the role of Paediatrician.

He completed his medical studies from southern India in Hyderabad and went on to the Republic of Ireland and England to complete his paediatric training followed by specialty exams in paediatrics. After practicing for several years in Ireland and England, he moved to Canada in 2014 and completed three years of neonatal fellowship from the University of Toronto (Sick Kids Hospital).

“When I visited Chatham, I got the opportunity to meet the paediatric team and the community,” Dr. Ismail stated.

“I was overwhelmed by the hospitality and the professionalism. Now I feel blessed to be a part of the amazing paediatric group in Chatham-Kent. I want to serve the children in the community to the best of my abilities. My family and I are looking forward to meeting my new colleagues in the hospital and people in the community.”

Dr. Yung Lee joins CKHA in the role of Anaesthetist.

He received his Doctor of Medicine and completed his Residency in Anaesthesia at the Federal University of Sao Paulo in Brazil. Dr. Lee completed post-graduate training in Cardiac Anaesthesia at Saint Paul’s Hospital, University of British Columbia in Vancouver and earned Fellowships in Obstetric Anaesthesia and Clinical Anaesthesia at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto. Since 2009 he has held the role of Staff Anesthesiologist at Chaleur Regional Hospital in Bathurst, New Brunswick.

“I am glad to have had the opportunity to join CKHA,” Dr. Lee stated.

“I was looking forward to returning to Ontario, to a tranquil small-medium size community with easy access to major cities, and Chatham fits it very well. The warmer weather throughout the year is certainly another positive point. I look forward to be able to provide care to local patients to the best of my ability and learn from my peers. I also look forward to enjoying the local community once I settle down.”

Catholic board announces the location for new Chatham school

The St. Clair Catholic District School Board has voted to approve the location of a new Catholic elementary school for north Chatham.

The school will be built at 801 McNaughton Ave., West, on property which the Board has owned since the 1990s.

“We believe this is a tremendous location for our new Chatham elementary school,” stated Dan Parr, Director of Education, in a press release.

“The new Chatham Children’s Treatment Centre is to be located on an adjacent property on McNaughton, which will afford many valuable partnership possibilities that will benefit our students.”

School and treatment centre staff will be able to connect more easily and more frequently for face-to-face meetings, which will lead to enhanced communication and better planning, school board officials stated.

Joint educational opportunities can occur more easily and there is potential for sharing of facilities on PD days, or for workshops and conferences.

This location would also make it easier for students with special needs to use the centre’s adapted pool and outdoor learning spaces, including an adapted playground, school board officials stated.

In addition, the close proximity to St. Clair College will provide for easy participation in a number programs, which are offered to elementary school students by the college.

The location is also adjacent to a soccer pitch and baseball fields.

Support for the location was not unanimous, with some trustees expressing concerns about traffic in the area, school board officials stated.

However, the Board is required to conduct a traffic study and has already entered into discussions with the Municipality of Chatham-Kent about steps that can be taken to alleviate traffic congestion.

“We are confident that the Board and the Municipality can work with the findings of the traffic study and put in place measures that will address concerns related to traffic flow and pedestrian safety,” stated Amy Janssens, Executive Superintendent of Corporate Services.

“We also look forward to sharing the results of the traffic study with the Board of Trustees.”

John Van Heck, chair of the Board, said none of the available north properties considered by the Board was either centrally located or adjacent to a parish church.

“However, when we looked at the additional ride times, both for bus students and for transportation to church for Mass, we found them to be minimal, and far outweighed by the tremendous opportunities which this location affords,” Van Heck stated.

The property is also serviced and appropriately zoned; therefore, September 2019 remains the Board’s target opening date for the new school.

“Our staff continues to work on securing a location for the new south Chatham elementary school and a further announcement is expected in the not-too-distant future,” added Parr.
