E-bike driver faces impaired driving charges

An E-bike driver faces impaired driving charges after an incident on Thursday night in Chatham.

Chatham-Kent Police Service officials say at approximately 9:30 p.m. an officer on general patrol in the city of Chatham observed an un-plated, blue and white E-bike allegedly swerving across the entirety of Wellington Street.

Police allege the E-bike then made a turn onto West Street, nearly striking a vehicle stopped at the intersection of Wellington Street and West Street.

The officer immediately initiated a traffic stop, however, the E-bike continued to travel south bound on West St. and finally stopped within the parking lot of The Beer Store located at 132 Richmond Street.

The officer believed the man was driving under the influence of alcohol and he was arrested.

The E-bike was towed from the location and the man was transported to Chatham-Kent Police Service Headquarters for breath tests.

A 51-year-old Chatham man was charged with having a blood alcohol concentration exceeding the legal limit.

He was released with a future court date of September 19, 2017.
