Crash at Murray and Reaume in Wallaceburg

A crash occurred a few hours after a 4-way stop was removed at the intersection of Murray Street and Reaume Avenue in Wallaceburg.

Chatham-Kent Police Service officials say the collision was called in at 3:36 p.m. and involved two vehicles.

A 22-year-old Wallaceburg man was charged with failing to yield.

Police say there were no injuries.

Damage is pegged at $7,000.

Mark Ceppi, engineering technologist for the Municipality, told the Sydenham Current that crews turned on the pedestrian crossover and removed the lights and signs for the all-way stop on Friday morning. Read more, here.

  1. This is a disaster waiting to happen. 4 days before school this is implemented. I get it is because we asked for construction to be completed and we are thankful for having been heard. What I don’t understand is this “crossover” not a crosswalk. No big flashing lights and sign hanging above the crossing area to alert drivers that someone is going to cross. Instead there are these small flashing lights on the poles at the side of the road which are only about 6 feet high. You won’t be able to see them if you are behind a transport or high vehicle until it’s too late. I was a passenger looking for how this works and didn’t see the flashing lights until we drove around the block to look again. Why is it not a regular crosswalk or at least have a light like they have a Murray and King (which is useless now that DA Gordon is closed). They say that the pedestrians need to make eye contact with the drivers to make sure it is safe to cross. I can’t imagine kids remembering to do that.. it would be great if they looked both ways all the times when crossing a street but that’s why we had crossing guards because they don’t always remember. Again.. as parents…grandparents…concerned citizens…we need to stand up for the safety of our children and any other pedestrian crossing here. Let’s not wait until someone gets hurt.

  2. -yesterday we were in a near miss at this intersection, then observed another near miss..this intersection is dangerous!

  3. PUT THE 4 WAY SIGN BACK UP , I USE THAT INTERSECTION EVERDAY ,IT IS A MESS, LAST FEW DAYS HAVE TURNED ON BRIDLE PATH JUST TO AVOID IT, PEOPLE DONT PAY ATTENTION, THERE ARE SKID MARKS ALL OVER MURRAY, COME ON PEOPLE REALLY!!! MAYBE IF ONE OF THE COUNCIL FAMILY MEMBERS GETS HURT IN A CAR ACCIDENT THERE ,IT WOULD BE A DIFFERENT STORY ,PUT THE DAMN SIGN BACK UP!!!

  4. I am offended at the comment by JA . I understand you may be just as concerned with the stop signs being removed but to actually say it might help if a council member had a family member in an accident is terrible. I certainly do not want my children or grandchildren (who are part of a council members family) or have any other member of councils family involved in an accident. We are trying to prevent accidents and/or anyone being hurt at this intersection. Who wishes that on anyone. Let’s be proactive and not hope someone gets hurt to resolve the issue.
