Time to get back at it

From The Pastor’s Pen – By Brian Horrobin

Former U.S. Representative and world record holder in the mile, Jim Ryun, once said, “Motivation is what gets you started. Habit is what keeps you going.”

Tomorrow is Labour Day, the unofficial end of summer and wake-up call that school and work routines resume after the holiday hiatus.

At this point you may still be wondering where the summer went and that you’re just not ready for fall.

Back when summer was about to start, you were motivated with visions of backyard barbecues, slices of juicy watermelon, and dips in the pool.

The classroom and the work lunchroom just don’t hold the same power of motivation, do they?

But do you know something?

Life is not lived hopping from one motivation mountain peak to the next.

No, it is a steady diet of habit that gets the job done.

Attending church is like that, too. If you need a gimmick or a bribe or a latte and premium bagel after service every week, you’re not likely to make it past the first visit.

However, if you make a commitment to be there every week, long sermon or cranky pew partner or not, than you will reap the rewards over the long haul.

With consistency lies the power.

You may need a little bit of motivation to get you out of the starting blocks, but it is habit that will keep you going.

Summer is over and the fall is here.

Why not make attending one of our community’s good churches one of your new habits?

You just might be surprised at the results.
