United Sirens of C-K

Building on the success of the first Positivity Day held last year, this year’s event has been expanded to include 12 Days of Positivity.

Positivity Themed days, which begin on Monday, September 4, 2017 and run through to Positivity Day on Friday, September 15, 2017, will focus on celebrating the many great aspects of the Chatham-Kent community.

Chatham-Kent Police Service, Chatham-Kent OPP, Chatham-Kent Fire and Emergency Services, EMS and United Way have come together and formed a committee named the “United Sirens of C-K.”

On Thursday, September 7, 2017 the ‘United Sirens of C-K’ have teamed up for ‘First Responders Day’ where they will attend grocery stores throughout Chatham-Kent to bag and carry out customer’s groceries. The schedule is as follows:

– Wallaceburg No Frills: 9:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m.

– Dresden Foodland: 10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.

– Blenheim Food Basics: 1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m.

– Tilbury No Frills: 2:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.

Donations of canned goods will be collected, at each location, and then delivered to the town’s food bank or the Salvation Army.

“Chatham-Kent is a great place to live and we know there are many people in our community who feel this way,” stated Darrin Canniff, co-chair of the citizen group that is organizing Positivity Day in C-K.

“So we decided it is time to band together to give a united voice to the significant population of positive people who live in Chatham-Kent.”

Happy Labour Day

Labour Day in Canada is celebrated on the first Monday of September.

It originally gave workers the chance to campaign for better working conditions or pay.

The day is now part of a long weekend for many Canadians.

The origins of Labour Day can be traced back to April 15, 1872, when the Toronto Trades Assembly organized Canada’s first significant demonstration for worker’s rights.

The aim of the demonstration was to release the 24 leaders of the Toronto Typographical Union who were imprisoned for striking to campaign for a nine-hour working day.

At this time, trade unions were still illegal and striking was seen as a criminal conspiracy to disrupt trade.

In spite of this, the Toronto Trades Assembly was already a significant organization and encouraged workers to form trade unions, mediated in disputes between employers and employees and signaled the mistreatment of workers.

There was enormous public support for the parade and the authorities could no longer deny the important role that the trade unions had to play in the emerging Canadian society.

Prime Minister Trudeau discusses North Korea threat

Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, issued a statement in response to North Korea’s latest testing of a nuclear weapon.

“Canada unequivocally condemns North Korea’s‎ nuclear test of September 3 which, combined with its aggressive program of ballistic missile testing, represents a clear and present threat to the safety and security of its neighbours and the international community,” Trudeau said.

“This most recent test, which appears to have been of a much greater magnitude than its five previous nuclear explosions, is in direct contravention of multiple UN Security Council resolutions and demonstrates once again North Korea’s flagrant disregard of international law.”

Trudeau added: “These continued provocations by North Korea’s leadership, along with their profoundly dangerous push to develop nuclear weapons and test ballistic missiles near neighbouring countries, only serve to further isolate them.”

Trudeau said Canada has been steadfast in insisting that North Korea abandon its current course.

“Including its aggressive rhetoric, and asks that it resumes constructive dialogue toward a comprehensive and verifiable solution,” the Prime Minister said.

“We urge the UN Security Council to take further decisive action to effectively constrain North Korea’s proliferation efforts, and call on all states to fully implement relevant UN sanctions. We will continue to work with key regional partners – including the United States, South Korea and Japan – as well as the broader international community, to counter the North Korean threat.”

Photo of the day

The Optimist Club of Sombra Township’s second annual Family Fun Day in Brander Park in late August proved to be fun, entertaining and educational to those in attendance.

The morning started with a petting zoo complete with snakes, birds and a kangaroo.

‘Stan the Magic Fireman’ taught fire safety and fascinated the audience with magic tricks.

He then provided rides through the park in his miniature fire truck.

Optimists and the Down River Junior Optimists assisted the children with crafts to take home and helped display Tate O’Leary’s modified race car that the kids could sit in and have their picture taken while sitting behind the wheel.

The day was completed with free hotdogs cooked up by the Knights of Columbus, Council 10873, Port Lambton.
