Dispute between roommates ends in police stand-off

A dispute between roommates ended with a stand-off with police early this morning in Chatham.

Chatham-Kent Police Service officials say yesterday at approximately 3 p.m. a man was inside his residence on Park Avenue W. in Chatham when his roommate attended to gather some of his personal belongings.

Police say when the roommate did not get an answer at the front door, he crawled through a basement window to get into the residence.

Once inside, the roommate was met by the man who allegedly had a baseball bat in one hand and a firearm in the other.

Police allege that the man pointed the firearm at the roommate, threatened him and then struck him with a baseball bat.

The roommate left the residence, but did not contact police.

Last night at 8 p.m. the roommate returned the residence.

When he knocked at the front door, he was met again by the man who was holding the bat and firearm in his hands.

Police allege the roommate was threatened again, so he left and this time, contacted police.

No injuries were reported.

With the assistance of the Chatham-Kent Police Service Critical Incident Response Team and a trained negotiator, police arrested the man at 12:30 a.m. this morning.

The 63-year-old Chatham man was charged with the following offences:

– Point firearm x 2

– Assault with a weapon

– Utter threats x 2

He was transported to Chatham-Kent Police Service Headquarters where he has been held for a bail hearing.
