Letter: Wallaceburg Animal Shelter manager bids farewell

As of September 14 2017, I will be leaving the Wallaceburg Animal Shelter.

For the last two months I have been training Sarah Carriere.

Sarah is a very compassionate, caring woman and very dog knowledgeable.

Susan Arends

She has been working some weekends at the shelter as well as picking up stray dogs.

She’s done an amazing job and will continue to do so.

It’s been my pleasure to be allowed to run the shelter for the last 12 years.

I’ve met amazing people who have adopted dogs from the shelter. Many still keep in contact.

The Wallaceburg and area community is fiercely protective of their shelter.

The support our shelter has is sitting in the two cemented exercise yards.

Around $15,000 dollars in cement and labour, much of the labour was donated as well, came from the community from memorial donations.

People, at the worst time of their lives, chose our shelter as a worthy cause.

Many thanks to these folks.

Our shelter was closed for renovations.

These renovations have made the kennel area a much nicer place for the dogs while they are in our care.

Two bigger kennels have been added as well as air conditioning and heating.

It made such a difference this summer for the animals.

We are grateful to the Carscallen family for this.

When Mrs, Carscallen passed away, a $75,000 dollar donation was left to our shelter to be used to better the quality of life for the dogs in our care.

I’m happy to say this was accomplished.

Thank you is not enough.

Thank you to Maryanne Holland at K9 Klips, she is the reason our dogs are able to get the medical treatment if needed. Maryanne runs the Animal Rescue Fund and is the lady who pays the bills.

The annual dinner and dance is a huge hit and always so much fun. So much community support.

Thank you Maryanne for this, you rock.

Fab Therrien, formerly from Pet Value. Fab is a fierce supporter and much money from her store, when she had it, and her customers went to the first cement pad as well as gift cards that have kept the dogs fed through the years.

I can imagine I’ve forgotten people, like our dog walking volunteers, Dana from Sydenham Current, the Clifford’s from Lost Pets of Chatham Kent, Vikki from the Glencoe Animal Shelter, and probably a whole lot more.

Many, many people, from volunteers to adopters, are the reason our shelter is as good as it is.

A huge thank you to everyone for your help and support over the years
Sarah will be needing this support until December 1.

Again, thank you one and all.
