Whose opinion matters to you?

From The Pastor’s Pen – By Brian Horrobin

It has been said that if you fuel your journey on the opinions of others, you are going to run out of gas.

It’s not that another’s opinion has no merit, or should not matter, it’s just that relying entirely on what others think may leave you disappointed or feeling as if you are not in control of your life.

God has given you a mind that can think and discern.

He has invested creativity and imagination in you for the purpose of setting goals and enjoying a blessed and productive life.

Also, He has invited each of us to simply ask Him for wisdom to know how to conduct our lives, and then to trust Him for the answer.

Consider the words of James 1:5-8: “If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him. But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That man should not think he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all he does.”

When I was younger I had various people advise me on the choice of a career path that would lead to a healthy income.

It involved making choices in post-secondary education that would eventually lead me to my destination.

The problem for me was that I was sensing something different from the Lord.

I took university courses that were not what I really wanted deep down in my heart, but were the ones others felt were wise.

I finally decided to go the way the Lord was directing me, and that was to enroll in seminary and study to be a pastor, something I have done now for over 31 years.

However, even the university courses I took had value as they served as an education prerequisite to the masters’ degree I needed at seminary.

God always knows best, so trust Him with the answers you need!
