Some Wallaceburg citizens are ready to be in the spotlight on Monday night.

A protest group is set to discuss their concerns about the Murray Street and Reaume Avenue intersection in front of Chatham-Kent council.

Krystal Gyuricza, who has spearheaded daily protests at the intersection, told the Sydenham Current that approximately 20 people are confirmed to attend the 6 p.m. meeting at the Civic Centre in Chatham on Monday.

“We have room for more people, we can give them rides,” Gyuricza said.

Anyone wishing to attend the meeting can meet the group of residents at the old Sobey’s parking lot on McNaughton Avenue in Wallaceburg at 5 p.m.

Gyuricza said three speakers are lined up to address council and express their concerns.

“I hope they say yes,” Gyuricza said.

“I hope they see there is a need for different lights.”

Last week, Gyuricza said the group are hoping for the installation of a pedestrian activated stop light and the installment of a 40 km/h school zone in front of Holy Family Catholic School on Murray Street.

The group has also gathered approximately 1,200 signatures on a petition they have started.

The Municipality removed a 4-way stop at the intersection back on September 1, and installed a new pedestrian crossover device.

Wallaceburg Coun. Carmen McGregor brought the concerns of the group forward last Monday,September 11, with a notice of motion.

“I am thankful that there are some parents and people out there bringing awareness and making sure that kids are getting to school safely,” she said.

“I hope that council will see fit to make this a safer corner and a safer situation for the children that are utilizing it. Not just children, other pedestrians. Anybody crossing over there. I hope that we have a positive result.”
