Retirement isn’t so bad after all

By Glen Turner – Special to the Sydenham Current

Ahhh… retirement!

There’s nothing quite like it.

So many positive things about it.

Some examples:

– The alarm clock becomes “occasional use only”

– Pressure to be somewhere on time is waaaay reduced.

– You get to see that there actually is life going on outside of working hours.

– So much more time for the important things… like gardens, boat, volunteering, visiting.

– You really don’t care anymore about the politics and hassles of the old workplace.

– The cheques come REGULARLY to you… my Dad used to call CPP and OAS his ‘welfare cheques’… not me!

– You don’t feel the least bit guilty about a) sleeping late or b) having a nap.

– You can marvel at how much you used to get done… AND did it while working full time!

– There are, of course, the old fart discounts… I used to be offended by them. Now, I love them. They add up!

– In my case, a hair appointment takes a lot less time… and I save a bundle on shampoo and conditioners!

– Shaving becomes an occasional duty, never to be ‘daily’ again.

– I seem to do laundry less often… but I cook a LOT more.

On the downside:

– There are more medical appointments, and now, with ‘-ologists’ instead of just your GP.

– You have to listen to a lot more complaints from friends about aches and pains, illnesses and afflictions, and medications.

– … and some people tend to get a little ‘set in their ways’.

Overall, though… THERE’S NOTHING QUITE LIKE RETIREMENT!!!
