The blessing of a beautiful heart

From the Pastor’s Pen – By Brian Horrobin

You know what they say, ‘it’s quality, not quantity.’

If that’s the case then William Shakespeare was on to something when he wrote this: “One beautiful heart is better than a thousand beautiful faces.”

The bard was from a different generation than ours, but I think his observation spans the ages and is applicable today.

The world loves beautiful faces.

People Magazine crowns one every year.

People clamour for them in the arts, the film industry, the music industry, and in professional sports.

Pardon me for saying this, but, beautiful faces are a dime a dozen.

Beautiful hearts on the other hand, well, they are harder to find.

What is a beautiful heart, you may ask?

It is the young mother offering her child the extra helping of food and herself going without.

It is the personal service worker listening the umpteenth version of the same story from an Alzheimer’s sufferer and acting as if it is fresh news.

It is the teenage grandchild reading slowly the words of Psalm 23 at the bed of their dying grandmother.

The beautiful heart thinks of others first before ever thinking of themselves.

It is the very heart of our Saviour, Jesus Christ, who laid down His life for others without demanding a payback.

Folks, our world needs more beautiful hearts because those hearts bring Jesus to the masses who desperately need them.

I encourage you to do some reading in Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John in the New Testament and study the beautiful heart of Jesus.

I then challenge you to go and apply what you have learned there.

Somebody needs a beautiful heart today!
