Latest ‘Carnage Alley’ crashes raises concern

Two tractor trailer accidents in two days have 401 safety advocates more concerned than ever.

Another tractor-trailer went off the road near Merlin Road, plowing through several feet of gravel and ending up in a steep ditch.

The crash was the second in as many days this week, along with six in five days leading up to Thanksgiving weekend.

“When I first read the news, I thought I was reading the same news report from the day before,” stated Alysson Storey in a press release.

“Unfortunately I was wrong. Thankfully the driver was not seriously hurt – but can we say the same for next time?”

Storey is part of a group from Chatham-Kent currently advocating for increased safety measures on the 401, including installing concrete median barriers and expansion to three lanes between Tilbury and London.

Storey has gathered support from the MPP from Chatham-Kent-Essex, Rick Nicholls and the MPP for Elgin-Middlesex- London, Jeff Yurek.

“As I said yesterday, and I’ll keep saying it until the Ministry of Transportation and Minister Steven Del Duca hear it… we need to make our highway safer in C-K and Elgin County,” Storey said.

“Concrete median barriers are the safest and most effective type of barrier that can protect all drivers, tractor trailer drivers included. We need concrete median barriers now.

Storey helped launch a petition about the issue after her friend Sarah Payne and her five-year-old daughter Freya were killed in a 401 crossover accident back in August near Dutton.

The issue was also brought up at Queen’s Park:
