Perjury and obstruct justice charges laid

A local woman faces perjury and obstruct justice charges after an investigation in Chatham.

Chatham-Kent Police Service officials say on October 10, a woman attended the Chatham Court House to apply to be a surety for a man that was being released from custody.

Police allege that under oath in a recorded court, the woman advised that she lived at a certain address in Ridgetown.

The woman was then accepted as the man’s surety., police say.

Therefore, he was placed on conditions to reside at the address with the woman.

Later on that same date and through investigation, police learned that the address the woman provided was false.

The woman mislead the court and as a result, the man was let out of custody, police allege.

Due to the unknown whereabouts of both the woman and the man, warrants were issued for their arrest.

On October 13, the 37-year-old Chatham-Kent man was located, arrested on the warrant and charged with failing to comply.

He was then transported to Chatham-Kent Police Service Headquarters.

Early this morning at 4:17 a.m. the 28-year-old Chatham woman was located, arrested on the warrant and charged with perjury and obstruct justice.

She was transported to Chatham-Kent Police Service Headquarters and later released with a court date of November 15, 2017.
