The demolition of the fire-ravaged home at 35 Hiram Street in Wallaceburg took place on Wednesday.

A crew from Koomans Demolition, who was awarded the tender for the project, was at the property with heavy equipment, ripping down the house on November 1.

Neighbours in the area were glad to see the work being done.

“I am happy to see that the whole process happened relatively quickly with minor delays,” Jeannie Carroll told the Sydenham Current.

“The eyesore will be gone and hopefully all the critters will find a new home elsewhere. I am excited to see what happens with the property in the future. If the grass is maintained, I will be happy.”

Carroll was concerned about pests at the property, after finding a dead rat in her back yard this summer.

“I’m just glad that it is finally happening,” said Carol English, who lives near the house.

“It was getting to be a real eye sore. I see it every time I looked out my back window. Just sad that it happened.”

“I think the whole neighbourhood is going to be very happy,” added Brenda Henry, who lives behind the home.

“It’s a fascinating process to watch.”

What ‘ignited’ the issue

Wallaceburg firefighters responded to a blaze at the property back on April 22.

The Criminal Investigations Unit of the Chatham-Kent Police Service investigated the fire as an arson.

Police officials said there was insufficient evidence to charge any suspects in the case.

Damage was pegged at $100,000.
