The Ontario Provincial Police nabbed three alleged speeders on the 401 in Chatham-Kent this weekend, and charged all three with stunt driving.
Incident #1
OPP officials say on November 3, at around 7:45 p.m. a member of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) was conducting RADAR enforcement on Highway 401 near Scane Road when they observed a westbound vehicle exceeding the posted speed limit of 100 km/hr.
The RADAR allegedly registered a speed in excess of 150 km/hr.
As a result, the driver, a 25-year-old London man, has been charged with the following:
– Race a motor vehicle – Excessive speed, contrary to the Highway Traffic Act, and
– Possess more than one licence, contrary to the Highway Traffic Act.
The driver was issued a Part III summons and will appear in a Chatham court on November 29, 2017 to answer to the charge.
Incident #2
OPP officials say on November 4, at around 2:40 p.m. a member of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) was conducting RADAR enforcement on Highway 401 near Scane Road when they observed an eastbound vehicle exceeding the posted speed limit of 100 km/hr.
The RADAR allegedly registered a speed in excess of 160 km/hr.
As a result, the driver, a 45-year-old Oakville man has been charged with race a motor vehicle – excessive speed, contrary to the Highway Traffic Act.
The driver was issued a Part III summons and will appear in a Chatham court on December 13, 2017 to answer to the charge.
Incident #3
OPP officials say on November 4, at around 3:45 p.m. a member of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) was conducting RADAR enforcement on Highway 401 near County Road 42 when they observed a westbound vehicle exceeding the posted speed limit of 100 km/hr.
The RADAR allegedly registered a speed in excess of 155 km/hr.
As a result, the driver, a 28-year-old Mississauga man has been charged with race a motor vehicle – excessive speed, contrary to the Highway Traffic Act.
The driver was issued a Part III summons and will appear in a Chatham court on December 4, 2017 to answer to the charge.
The driver’s licence has been suspended and the vehicle impounded for a period of seven days, as per statute.
Chatham-Kent OPP would like to remind drivers that stunt driving or racing is one of the most serious and reckless forms of aggressive driving, and it puts everyone on the road at serious risk of injury or death.
The penalties for driving 50 km/hr or more over the speed limit are as follows:
– Immediate 7-day licence suspension and 7-day vehicle impoundment
– Upon conviction, $2,000 to $10,000 fine, six demerit points, up to six months jail, up to two year licence suspension for a first conviction
– Driver’s licence suspension of up to 10 years for a second conviction within 10 years
