Firefighters encouraging C-K to ‘Grow, Give and Move’ this Movember

(Chatham-Kent Professional Firefighters Association)

If you see a fire truck in Chatham or Wallaceburg this month, you’ll notice even they’re sporting mustaches for Movember.

The Chatham-Kent Professional Firefighters Association (CKPFFA) with support from Chatham-Kent Fire & Emergency Services are partnering with local businesses, Chatham Sobey’s, Chatham Superstore and Canadian Tire in Wallaceburg to promote men’s health and the fight against prostate cancer.

“A moustache is a fun way to cause some sort of commotion and inquiring questions. These conversations open the door to explain what Movember is all about and raise critical funds,” stated Jon Benoit, campaign co-chairman, in a press release.

“It is also a reminder to friends and family the importance of taking action early when a health issue arises.”

The CKPFFA will be volunteering at local stores every weekend in November, helping customers carry out their purchases, selling t-shirts ($20) and collecting donations.

Booths will be set up at the following locations:

– Chatham Sobey’s on November 5th, 12th, 18th, 25th & 26th

– Chatham Superstore November 18th, 25th and 26th.

– Wallaceburg’s Canadian Tire November 12th & 18th.

“We are also encouraging everyone to, Grow it & Show it, and grow a mustache for the campaign through November,” said Derek Resendes, campaign co-chairman, in a press realeas.

“But, you don’t have to grow a mustache to be involved, the Movember Foundation is also running Move for Movember, you can raise money by running, walking, swimming, etc.”

All the profits will be donated to the Movember Foundation.

Additional donations can be made online to the Chatham-Kent Firefighters Movember Team.

The Movember Foundation is the only charity tackling men’s health on a global scale, year round.

They’re addressing some of the biggest health issues faced by men: prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health, and suicide prevention.

On average, 11 Canadian men die from prostate cancer every day.

Testicular cancer is the most common form of cancer in Canadian men 15-29 years old.

Municipality of Chatham-Kent launches ‘Fuel Up!’

The Municipality of Chatham-Kent Recreation Facilities in partnership with the Chatham-Kent Public Health Unit and Super Kids CK is launching a pilot project to support healthy eating in two local arenas across Chatham-Kent.

Starting the first week of November, the Tilbury Memorial and Blenheim Memorial Arenas will be offering healthier options in their canteens.

These options will support the Healthy Kids Community Challenge Theme 3, “Choose to boost veggies and fruit”.

Throughout the month of September, community members were given the opportunity to help determine which healthier items would be sold in the arenas and were clear in their interest in having healthier choices available for themselves and their families.

Launch dates for the arenas are as follows:

– Blenheim Memorial Arena – Saturday November 4th from 9:30 am to noon.

– Tilbury Memorial Arena – Saturday November 11th from 9:30 am to noon.

During the Fuel Up! launch dates, staff will be available with resources and information in each of these locations. Additionally, the newest member of the team, our Super Kids CK Mascot, will be on hand to greet and encourage healthy eating.

“This is an exciting opportunity in our community,” stated Lyndsay Davidson, Public Health Dietitian, Chatham-Kent Public Health Unit, in a press release.

“The pilot project will provide our arenas with the ability to support individuals and families who are being active and provide healthier food choices.”

“The ability to have a healthier food choice is happening everywhere, why not in our Recreational Facilities,” stated Rob Veccia, supervisor, Tilbury Memorial Arena.

“It is a great ‘fit’, no pun intended, for an already great place to get active.”

At each of the locations, there will be tracking cards that will allow people who purchase 6 healthy food or beverage items from these arena canteens to receive a free Super Kids CK prize.

The pilot project will run until the arena canteens close in the spring of 2018.

For more information on the Fuel Up! Pilot Project, contact Lyndsay Davidson, Public Health Dietitian, at 519-352-7270 ext. 2478, Rob Veccia, Supervisor, Tilbury Memorial Arena, 519-682-1022 or Chris Kirkwood, Supervisor, Blenheim Memorial Arena, 519-676-5401.

The SouthWest Agricultural Conference is around the corner

The SouthWest Agricultural Conference returns January 3 and January 4, 2018 to celebrate it’s 25th anniversary:
‘A Legacy of Agricultural Excellence’.

With over 40 sessions, delivered by top experts in the field, growers will learn about everything from precision agriculture to maximizing yield, nutrient management to cover crops and pest management to marketing.

Complimenting the lineup of speakers will be the traditional trade show and Taste Ontario reception, along with exciting additions to thank registrants for being part of the past 25 years, and looking forward to another 25 years of SWAC excellence.

“Unbelievable,” stated Peter Johnson, program co-chair.

“The 25th SWAC program is amazing… awesome topics, great speakers, and highlighted by two incredible Canadian feature speakers. This is one conference you just cannot afford to miss.”

Feature Speakers include: Jon Montgomery and Lieutenant general, the Honourable Roméo Dallaire, retired.

Orgaizers say Montgomery is a celebrated Canadian Olympian and host of The Amazing Race Canada, who will inspire
attendees to step outside of their comfort zone, pursue their dreams and conquer their fears.

Dallaire is a true Canadian hero and humanitarian, whose incredible legacy will leave the audience humbled,
challenged to make a difference, and proud to be Canadian, organizers said.

The full program can be found at www.southwestagconference.ca.

Registration is available until December 15, online at www.southwestagconference.ca or by phone, fax or mail.

Organizers say registration is limited, and this conference fills up fast.
