LKDSB commemorates ‘Treaties Recognition Week’

The Lambton-Kent District School Board commemorates Treaties Recognition Week on November 6-10, joining the Ministry of Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation and school boards across the province in promoting education and awareness about treaties and treaty relationships.

Throughout the week, LKDSB students and staff will learn more about Ontario’s treaties and enhance understanding about Indigenous issues, histories and perspectives.

“We have a diverse population of Indigenous students, leaders and staff in the LKDSB who enrich our classrooms and workplaces every day. Treaties Recognition Week is an opportunity to reaffirm the importance of learning and understanding Indigenous issues, histories and perspectives in a safe and caring learning environment,” stated Jim Costello, director of education.

School board officials say the LKDSB is committed to supporting the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada: Calls to Action as they relate to education.

In addition to ongoing efforts to build capacity among staff, LKDSB principals recently had an opportunity to learn about Ontario’s treaties during a Board-wide professional development event. Each school received a Treaty Kit, which contains resources to support educating students about treaties and raising awareness about this important aspect of Ontario’s history.

As well, several elementary and secondary teachers received in-depth training to help lead their schools towards greater understanding as part of the commitment to implementing the recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commissions Call to Action in Education.

Treaties Recognition Week also mark the official implementation of the Traditional Territorial Acknowledgement across the LKDSB, which recognizes the traditional land of the four Indigenous communities within the LKDSB’s catchment area: Aamjiwnaang First Nation, Delaware Nation, Kettle & Stony Point First Nation and Walpole Island First Nation.

The Traditional Territorial Acknowledgement has become an important component of the opening exercises in LKDSB schools and at Board meetings.

Fifth Street bridge completion delayed

Due to unforeseen construction delays, the closure of the Fifth Street Bridge to both vehicular and pedestrian traffic will be extended until June 2018, municipal officials announced on Tuesday.

The delays were resulting from both demolition schedule and minor design changes upon completion of demolition.

Attempts were made to accelerate the schedule but were unable to achieve opening prior to the end of the year.

The municipality is exploring all its options to ensure completion provisions of the contract are enforced.

Winter weather conditions will force the shut-down of construction operations in January which will restart again once weather conditions allow.

The Engineering and Transportation Division appreciates the patience and consideration of Chatham-Kent residents during the completion of this necessary rehabilitation project.
