Red Devils add ‘4-time NLL champion’ to coaching staff

The Wallaceburg Red Devils have added a four-time National Lacrosse League champion to their coaching staff.

Johnny Powless

The Junior ‘B’ lacrosse club announced that Johnny Powless has agreed to be an assistant coach with the Red Devils for the 2018 Season.

“Johnny wants to get down here and get working on 2018 as soon as possible,” stated Justin Durston, Red Devils coach, in a press release.

“He wants to work with the offence and get them all under the same page. He’s not only a winner, but he is very well respected and Johnny will bring an abundance of knowledge to our system.”

Powless currently plays for the Georgia Swarm, who are the defending NLL champions.

He is also the older brother of Sid Powless, who played for the Red Devils last season.

Powless and Wallaceburg’s Jordan Durston, who is also an assistant coach with the Red Devils, won a Minto Cup in 2014 as members of the Six Nations Arrows.

Red Devils officials say they plan on coaches Justin Durston, Jordan Durston and Jamie Knight to return to the coaching staff in 2018.

Red Devils officials say the coaching staff, executive and players are excited about Powless being a part of the staff next season.

“It not only affects the Red Devils but it is huge for our entire organization, including minor, to have such an amazing talent wanting to come here to coach,” Durston said.

“We are truly lucky to have him.”

The Wallaceburg Lacrosse Alliance, which is a combination of Wallaceburg Minor Lacrosse and the Junior ‘B’ Red Devils, received the 2017 Promotion and Development Award from the Ontario Lacrosse Association on the weekend. Read more, here: Wallaceburg Lacrosse receives provincial recognition
