Tartan girls heading to OFSSAA

The Wallaceburg Tartans are off to Huntsville this week, where they are set to compete in the OFSAA ‘AA’ senior girls basketball championship.

The Tartans are the #5 seed in the tournament, and will open up against the #17 seed Fenelon Falls at 9 a.m. on Thursday morning.

Wallaceburg clinched a third straight OFSAA birth, after winning the ‘AA’ SWOSSAA championship, beating Essex in the final last week, 46-26. Check out the game recap and photos, here: Tartans capture SWOSSAA hoops crown, heading to OFSAA

Janine Day, the Tartans head coach, told the Sydenham Current she believes this year’s squad has what it takes to capture the provincial crown.

“It’s a good group… we’ve lost five games this year and we’ve been ranked in the top four the last two years. Obviously, I’m hoping for that, but whatever happens then we’ll take our seed and do our best there,” Day said.

“I think the biggest thing at OFSAA is grinding… to make it to the Saturday, you have to win five games. That’s tough. Just keeping the kids focused and realizing that there are going to be ups and downs in the game, but you have to play to the buzzer.”

Watch for updates on the Tartans progress in the tournament, which runs from November 23-25.
