Lakers coaches resign, team snaps 15-game losing streak

Before the Wallaceburg Lakers snapped a 15-game losing streak on Wednesday night, their entire coaching staff quit.

Ritch Kanally, the general manager of the team, confirmed the news.

“Coaches stepped down (for) personal reasons,” Kanally told the Sydenham Current.

Head coach John Hartig, along with assistant coaches John Hartig Jr. and Nick Hartig are no longer with the team.

The Hartig’s took over from Rick Vancoillie and his staff just eight games into the season. Read more about that story, here.

The Lakers went 0-11-0-0 with Hartig at the helm.

Taking over behind the bench on Wednesday night for Wallaceburg was Kanally and Darryl Lucio, the team’s assistant general manager.

Lakers 3, Flags 1

Despite being out-shot 25-13, the Wallaceburg Lakers topped the Mooretown Flags on Wednesday night, 3-1.

Travis Moore was stellar between the pipes for the Lakers making 24 saves for the victory.

Austin Bentley got the scoring started for Wallaceburg in the first period with a powerplay goal. Josh Oberg picked up an assist.

Matt Tourigny scored an insurance marker at the 14:35 mark in the third period, with assists going to Stone Jacobs and Bailey Smith.

The win snaps a 15-game losing streak for the Lakers and improved their record to 2-17-0-0. The team is still last place in the West Stobbs Division of the Provincial Junior Hockey League.

Wallaceburg will hit the road this weekend with two games.

They’ll be in Blenheim for a 6:15 p.m. puck drop against the Blades on Saturday, before heading down to Amherstburg to face the Admirals at 7 p.m. on Sunday.
