The Walpole Island Thunderbirds senior girls volleyball team are the local elementary school champions.

Head coach Karen Williams says the girls captured an exciting tournament win on Wednesday at WDSS in Wallaceburg.

“I had all the confidence in the world in these girls,” she told the Sydenham Current.

“They have come such a long way since I taught them in Grade 5. I was just so excited to be there to see it.”

Williams said it was an exciting game in the semi-finals, and then again in the championship.

“We came up against a challenging team in Dresden in the semi-finals, they gave us our first loss of the season, but the girls pulled through together, team work, supportive of each other and they made it happen,” she said.

They ended up winning the semi-finals and in the finals as well.

This is the second straight year the Thunderbirds have won the senior girls volleyball crown.
