Letter: Amazing support for Sacred Heart Food Bank

Students from Riverview Central School in Port Lambton gathered 1,500 cans for the local food bank (Dana Haggith)

The Port Lambton Sacred Heart Food Bank has held a variety of activities to raise money for our Christmas Hampers. This year we are assisting around 50 families in need, with food. We give toys to children up 16 years of age. and supply knitted toques, gloves and scarves to all families with children.

On November 4, the Knights of Columbus from Council 10873 held a roast beef dinner and charity auction, which raised over $4,000 for the Scared Heart Food Bank.

On November 26, the Sombra Township Optimist Club, along with the Port Lambton Knights of COlumbus Council 10873, and the Sacred Heart Food Bank held their annual can drive for Ward #1, which is the old Sombra Township area. The food items were dropped off at the St. James Anglican Church basement; we have been using their basement for years now.

On December 2, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. we had our annual cookie walk at the Port Lambton Community Hall. The cookie walk was started by Carol e Decker about 16 years ago.

On December 4, we held our annual fowl bingo at the Sombra Community Hall. We took this over from the Sombra Catholic Women’s League who hosted the Fowl Bingo for more than 50 years.

On December 11, we packed gifts we received at Vandamme Park, the Senior Port Lambton Pirates graciously let us use their clubhouse room again this year.

Earlier this week we loaded up at Riverview and Sacred Heart schools, the can goods that the children collected on their own for the past seven weeks. These children do an amazing job collecting food.

Riverview collected about 1,500 cans.

On December 16, we start delivering our boxes of food at 8 a.m. We have the Wilkesport, Becher and Port Lambton Fire Departments, the Senior Pirates Baseball team, along with many other volunteers from the community.

In closing, I would like to thank everyone who helped in any way with our Christmas Hamper program. The community went above and beyond in donating food and gifts.

On behalf of the Sacred Heart Food Bank, I would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
