Salvation Army worker has toy-filled car stolen in Wallaceburg

A car, which was packed with toys and donations for the Salvation Army, has been stolen in Wallaceburg.

Captain Karen Holland, of the The Salvation Army Chatham-Kent Ministries, told the Sydenham Current the theft occurred on Thursday afternoon December 14 around 4:30 p.m.

“Mark Burford, the Family Services worker in Wallaceburg, had just picked up a significant donation of toys and blankets to be given out in our Christmas packages,” she said.

“He left them in his car in the back parking lot where they do the sorting of the toys each year (in the former Sobey’s location in Wallaceburg.) He went into the building to sort some toys, he came out to get the other toys and his car was gone and obviously everything that was in it. The police were called, but it has not turned up yet.”

Holland said it is a disturbing situation.

“It’s distressing anytime of the year, but especially this time of the year,” she said.

“Mark’s working very hard to put all the packages together for the families in the Wallaceburg area on behalf of the Salvation Army. This is his only form of transportation, so now he’s without that. The toys can be replaced easily, but he’s inconvenienced. It’s distressing.”

Messages left with the Chatham-Kent Police Service have yet to be returned.
