Firefighters responded to a blaze at the Westcourt apartments in Wallaceburg early on Friday morning.

Fire officials say the call came to the 200 Westcourt, Unit 13 at 2:38 a.m., when a resident called 911.

“A quick response by firefighters from Wallaceburg Station #3 prevented the fire from spreading to other areas of the main fire occupancy and the adjacent occupancy,” stated Bob Davidson, assistant fire chief, in a press release.

“Fire damage was contained to the unit of origin and smoke damage was contained to the unit of origin and the adjacent unit. There were no reported injuries.”

Davidson says the cause is believed to be accidental.

“The fire originated in the basement area, he said.

An estimated $70,000 damage was caused as a result of the blaze, while $140,000 in property was saved.

Davidson says firefighters will be returning the area to visit residents, check smoke alarms, discuss fire safety planning and answer questions.
