An investigation has been launched after a fire at the former Hillerich and Bradsby (H&B) building in Wallaceburg.

Chatham-Kent Fire & Emergency Services officials say firefighters were called to the blaze at 7:08 p.m. on Friday evening, December 29.

“Firefighters from Station #3 in Wallaceburg arrived to find a working fire in an industrial occupancy at 21 Arnold Street,” stated Bob Davidson, assistant fire chief.

“The fire was contained to the building of origin.”

Davidson said approximately $500,000 damage was caused, while $100,000 worth of property was saved.

The cause is still under investigation.

“Report any unusual activity to police,” Davidson said.

Fire fighters from Station #1 and Station #2 in Chatham, along with the volunteer firefighters in Wallaceburg, helped the firefighters from Station #3 in Wallaceburg to battle the blaze.

A house at the back of the property was exposed to the blaze, along with an industrial occupancy to the south of the property, Davidson said.

Chatham-Kent Police Service officials say the building was abandoned and there have been no injuries reported.

Police say firefighters remain on the scene and roads are no longer blocked in the area.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Constable Hamilton at 519-436-6600 ext. 284.

Damage was estimated at $70,000 and no one was injured.

Investigators believed the cause of the fire was suspicious and charges were eventually laid.
