Whiteout conditions forces 402 closure

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has closed Highway 402 due to persistent whiteout conditions and several motor vehicle collisions.

As of 3 p.m. on Thursday, Highway 402 is closed from Highway 401 to Nauvoo Road west of Strathroy, Ontario.

Police are currently on scene dealing with several collisions and vehicles in the ditch and will provide an update once the roadway is re-opened.

The OPP is urges motorists to remain safe and avoid travel until the conditions improve and the roadways re-open.

All motorists are encouraged to check weather and road travel conditions by calling 5-1-1 or checking online at www.Ontario.ca/trip for up to date road conditions for provincially maintained highways.

This bilingual service is available 24 hours a day and provides updates on highway closures and road conditions.

Police ask to not call the OPP Provincial Communications Centre (PCC) for road and weather conditions.

Police will not provide this information.

By calling the PCC it ties up phone lines used for emergency calls.
