Extreme cold warning continues

An extreme cold warning remains in effect for Chatham-Kent, as a prolonged period of very cold wind chills continues.

Forecasters say a Arctic ridge of high pressure continues to bring cold temperatures and brisk northwesterly winds to Southwestern Ontario.

Windchill values were expected to continue in the minus 30 to minus 35 range Saturday morning and then continue in the minus 25 to 30 range until Saturday night.

A few regions may remain in the Extreme Cold Warning until Sunday morning and then conditions are expected to improve.

“Extreme cold puts everyone at risk,” Environment Canada officials say.

“Cover up. Frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially with wind chill. Check on older family, friends and neighbours. Keep emergency supplies in your vehicle such as extra blankets and jumper cables. If it’s too cold for you to stay outside, it’s too cold for your pet to stay outside.”

Extreme cold warnings are issued when very cold temperatures or wind chill creates an elevated risk to health such as frost bite and hypothermia, forecasters say.
