Theft suspects arrested in Chatham

A Wallaceburg woman and a Walpole Island man were arrested on Wednesday and now face numerous charges.

Chatham-Kent Police Service officials say yesterday at 3 p.m. a man and woman were inside Giant Tiger on Grand Avenue W. in Chatham.

After placing numerous items into a Giant Tiger cart, they allegedly exited the store making no attempt to pay for the merchandise valued at $80, police say.

An officer located the pair together on Grand Avenue W.

Police allege the man was on a bicycle and the woman was with the Giant Tiger cart still full of the stolen items.

Through investigation it was learned that the man had allegedly stolen the bicycle he was on from the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance earlier in the day.

The theft of the bike was captured on video surveillance at CKHA, police say.

At 3:15 p.m. the 33-year-old Walpole Island man was arrested and charged with two counts of theft under $5,000 and two counts of possession of property obtained by a crime under $5,000.

He was transported to CKPS Headquarters where he has been held for a bail hearing.

At the same time, the 33-year-old Wallaceburg woman was arrested and charged with theft under $5,000 and possession of property obtained by a crime under $5,000.

She was also transported to CKPS Headquarters and then later released with a court date of January 31, 2018.
