PAWR offering 250 free spay/neuters for cats

Pet and Wildlife Rescue (PAWR) is thrilled to announce their receipt of a $14,500 grant from PetSmart Charities of Canada to help fuel its spay and neuter efforts in the Chatham-Kent region.

PAWR officials say it has been just over a year since they took over the operation of the animal shelter in Chatham, and since day one, their focus has been to improve the lives of local animals.

Providing affordable or free spay/neuters for cat owners has always been one of their top priorities.

In 2018, with the help of this new donation, PAWR will offer 250 free spays/neuters to local pet parents with furry felines in need of being fixed.

“Our team is excited to take the first step in our journey to bring the number of cats in our community to a more sustainable level,” stated Myriam Armstrong, operations manager at PAWR.

“By spaying or neutering our feline population, we hope to prevent unplanned litters and enhance the perception of cats in our community as treasured members of our families.”

PetSmart Charities of Canada’s regional relationship manager, Dani Mailing, says they are happy to contribute to PAWR’s cause.

“We’re proud to support Pet And Wildlife Rescue with this grant that will bolster the organization’s spring kitten intervention plan by offering subsidized spay/neuter procedures for the pets of residents in the Chatham-Kent region,” Mailing said.

Applicants will be required to bring proof of Chatham-Kent region residence in order to qualify for a free spay/neuter voucher and some restrictions will apply as to which cats will be good candidates for the surgery.

There will be a one voucher per family rule.

The first registration blitz will take place at the PetSmart store in Chatham on February 2 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Another registration blitz will be held on Friday, February 16 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Wallaceburg Animal Shelter.

People are being encouraged to come and meet their volunteers and register your cat for a free spay or neuter at their 105 Arnold Street location in Wallaceburg.

Applicants will be asked to bring a piece of ID and their cat’s paperwork/health information.

Registration information will be available on www.pawr.org and on the animal welfare agency’s Facebook page.

PetSmart Charities of Canada aims to proactively prevent pet homelessness by supporting spay and neuter efforts.

With the help of animal welfare partners, such as Pet And Wildlife Rescue, PetSmart Charities of Canada has facilitated over 54,000 spay and neuter surgeries in the Canada since 1999.
