Officer saves woman following a crash outside Chatham

A Chatham-Kent Police Service officer saved a woman after a crash outside of Chatham this week.

Police officials say Tuesday afternoon, around 4:30 p.m. police responded to a single motor vehicle collision on Prince Albert Road just north of Union Line.

Police allege the driver, a 67-year-old woman, lost control of her vehicle, left the roadway and slid into a water filled ditch.

Constable Scott Renders, the first officer on scene, observed the vehicle filling up with water and the woman unable to escape.

The officer, without hesitation, jumped into the cold water and smashed out a window to free the woman from her vehicle, police officials say.

The woman was transported to the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance as a precaution.

The officer was not injured.

The collision remains under investigation.
