Broad to swim in Fiji at Junior Pan Pacific Championships

Madison Broad

Swimming Canada announced its teams for the Junior Pan Pacific Championships at the conclusion of the recent Canadian Swimming Championships, and a Wallaceburg swimmer has made the cut.

Wallaceburg’s Madison Broad of the Chatham Y Pool Sharks will be on a team of 16 young women and 13 young men who will compete at the Junior Pan Pacific Championships, which take place Aug. 23-27 in Suva, Fiji.

“We’re really excited,” stated Ken McKinnon, the National Development Coach, in a press release.

“We have a lot of new names of first-time junior team members, and our men’s team is starting to come up to equally balanced with the women’s team.”

The swim that got Broad nominated was in the 200 metre backstroke event at the Canadian Championships.

She clocked a personal best time of 2:12.50 to capture the silver medal.

Swimming Canada officials say the Canadian Swimming Championships served as the Trials for the junior teams, and fell at the normal time for senior Trials due to Commonwealth Games being held in April

“It was a really trying situation where they really got to experience a Trials,” McKinnon said.

“There were some hits and misses, but that’s part of development. That’s what we’re looking for from the younger kids so they’re prepared for the senior trials and the senior teams in the future.”

Broad’s coach Kyle Pinsonneault was ecstatic with the news.

“Well I have coached swimmers to national team tour teams and camps, but I now can add that I placed a swimmer on a national team for an international games,” Pinsonneault posted on social media.

“Now officially have one going to Fiji for the Jr. Pan Pacific games in August.”

Broad, 17, recently accepted a full-ride scholarship to the University of Toledo.

She is expected to start at the Division 1 NCAA school in September of 2019.
