Sick of the silly politics

By Glen Turner – Special to the Sydenham Current

Is it just me? Or do others feel the same way?

Namely, that politics these days has become… well, are just silly?

Look at the Provincial and Federal situations.

The Conservative rant is ‘Trudeau bad, Liberals bad, Liberal policy bad’… no matter what.

The Liberal rant was similar… ‘Harper bad, Conservatives bad, Conservative policy bad’… no matter what.

Provincially, it’s ‘Wynne bad, Liberals bad’ etc., etc.

And now with a new ‘populist’ leader, it will be the same from the left about Ford.

Is any of that correct?

OF COURSE NOT!!

There are good elements in any political platform in this country, whether it’s Liberal, NDP or Conservative.

The voter’s choice is to narrow it down to what the individual voter prefers.

Partisan politics is just that. Partisan. Unfortunately, that can lead to extremism, which is soooo divisive.

Just look at the United States, the Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and Mark Levin style is, in my opinion, the most destructive element in American politics.

Locally, all you need to do is read a certain columnist to see the anti-Liberal, anti-Trudeau rants.

In one way, it’s a shame the same newspaper doesn’t offer column space to an opposing view.

At this point in my life, I prefer to avoid political discussions. As soon as I discover that someone is rabidly Conservative or rabidly left-wing, I simply tune out.

I guess if I had to label myself… the only term I could use is ‘centrist’.

Leading up to our Provincial election, I’ll be looking at ALL platforms and policy statements, and go from there.

I’ve voted for all three parties over the years.

And, by the way… I’ve been politically active since I was 18. I’ve done it all, from door-to-door canvassing with candidates, to phone campaigns, to signs, and conventions.

Not any more.

Just too silly.
