Nominations announced for Walpole Island election

The list of nominations for Chief and Council for the 2018 Walpole Island Band Election has been released.

Walpole Island officials say if candidate choose not to accept the nomination, they must submit a written withdrawal of nomination to the Electoral Officer.

“This from must be signed by you, either in the presence of a justice of the peace, a notary public, a commissioner of oaths, the Electoral Officer or Membership Clerk,” Walpole Island officials posted on social media.

“If you fail to submit your refusal by 4 p.m. on Thursday, April 26, 2018, then your name will be accepted for nomination and included on the ballot. You can hand your signed withdrawal form to Membership at the Governance Building.”

The election will take place on June 9 at the Walpole Island Governance Building.

Campaign Night is being held at the Walpole Island Sports Complex on May 30 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Voting will take place on election day from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Dan Miskokomon was re-elected as the Chief of Walpole Island First Nation after their most recent election in June of 2016.

Miskokomon cruised to victory gathering 347 votes. Second place finisher Charles Sampson picked up 214 votes, while Ron Soney had 161 votes.
