The Chatham-Kent Police Service is investigating after a fatal crash outside of Wallaceburg. Police say on Friday, April 20 at approximately 8:18 p.m. a single vehicle left the roadway on Border Road and entered a water filled ditch, landing upside down and becoming partially submerged. An 18-year-old female and an 18-year-old male were removed from the vehicle. The male was sent to hospital with hypothermia. Unfortunately, the female was sent to hospital in critical condition, where she died as a result of her injuries.

The homicide investigation on Book Street in Wallaceburg remains on-going. Inspector Trevor Crane, of the Major Crime Unit, provided an update on the case. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Chatham-Kent Police Service Major Crime Unit at 519-436-6616.

Wallaceburg Coun. Jeff Wesley has reaffirmed he’s not going to be running in the 2018 election in Chatham-Kent. Wesley says it was not an easy decision, as his love for all things Wallaceburg and area runs deep, but with the complete support of my family, the long-time Municipal Councillor thought it was time. The nomination period for the Municipal election runs from May 1 to July 27. Election day is on October 22.

Chatham-Kent council unanimously approved the site plan for the proposed new casino in Chatham. Council gave the greenlight to the project at the corner of Richmond and Kiel Drive. Gateway Casinos is planning to invest $36-million into the project, and create over 200 jobs. East Kent Councillor David Vandamme says he is concerned about the void left behind in Dresden, but Mayor Randy Hope says Gateway plans on working with Dresden Raceway and plans are in the works to increase signage and promotions as well.

The Knights of Pythias in Wallaceburg has once again made a $2,000 donation to Special Olympics Chatham-Kent. Bea Stacey, the group’s coordinator, says the money will go toward covering different fees for busing or for facility usage. Stacey said this is the fourth straight year the K of P has donated to their group.
