Pastor Joseph Brian Gilbert, a member of Walpole Island First Nation, died peacefully with his family by his side on Monday, April 30, 2018 at the age of 74.

Joseph is the son of the late Edmund and Julia (Kewayosh) Gilbert. Beloved husband of Sharon Mae (Armstrong). Loving father of Gaylynn Gilbert, Sondra Gilbert and Jeremy Gilbert. Dear grandfather of Kyle, Andrea (Nigel), Ryan, Brian and Cecilia and great grandfather of 9 great grandchildren. Brother of Jenny Blackbird, Shirley Ermatinger, Mary Gilbert, Helena Taylor and the late Harriett, Amanda, Frank, Ed Jr., Larry and George.

Joseph was the pastor of the Walpole Island Evangelistic Centre and was the Chief of Walpole Island First Nation for 6 terms. Joseph was also a builder of houses and churches with skills as an Iron Worker, pressure welder, carpenter and plumber. The family will receive relatives and friends at the Evangelistic Centre, 156 Dan Shab Road on Walpole Island from 5 PM on Thursday until Saturday morning.

The funeral will be celebrated at the Walpole Island Sports Complex, 770 Tecumseh Road, Walpole Island at 1 PM on Saturday, May 5 with visiting at the complex in the two hours prior.     I would like to give my condolance to the Gilbert family many memories of this family , hearing brother joey sing and preach in Mt pleasant mich. And at walpole island campmeeting . I prey god comforts and gives the Gilbert famliy peace. . Michelle sawmick pena
