Scam targets people’s generosity and kindness

A new scam has been reported in the Chatham-Kent area and it targets people’s generosity and kindness.

Chatham-Kent Crime Stoppers official say the suspects, often well dressed and pleasant, advise the victims that they are on a lengthy urgent road trip and have lost their wallet.

“They state they are stranded in need of money for fuel,” Crime Stoppers officials say.

“In a few incidents the suspects have attempted to obtain the victims credit card along with cash. Sometimes they offer to give the victim fake gold jewelry as collateral.”

Crime Stoppers officials added: “If you are waved down on an off ramp from the 401 or approached in your community by a person attempting this scam obtain as much information possible about the suspect and the vehicle they are driving. The contact the police or Crime Stoppers immediately.”
