Local Food Week celebrated in Chatham-Kent

The importance of locally grown food to Chatham-Kent’s economic base and overall health of its residents was celebrated at the Civic Centre this morning as Local Food Week (June 4-10) began.

Ron Faubert and MaryAnne Udvari of the Kent Federation of Agriculture spoke of the importance of agri-business as a $3 billion economic driver for the community. They noted, in a larger sense, that Canada produces some 200 different agricultural products.

They urged residents to learn more about local producers, roadside stands and more at http://buylocalbuyfreshchathamkent.com/?page_id=1825

Councillor Leon Leclair said Chatham-Kent offers unparalleled variety, price, safety and quality in terms of fresh produce and urged everyone present to make sure they include local products as part of their diet.

Lyndsay Davidson, a public health dietitian with the Chatham-Kent Public Health Unit said eating locally grown produce is a simple, affordable and effective way for families to improve their health.

Mayor Randy Hope echoed the sentiments of other speakers, telling residents that wise food choices help their community and their families.

Immediately following the flag-raising a local food market featuring vendors across Chatham-Kent and a barbeque featuring products from Roesch Meats took place outside the Civic Centre.
