Humble Pie A La Mode

From The Pastor’s Pen – By Brian Horrobin

Nobody deliberately chooses to have a lesson in humility but sometimes that is just what we need.

The thing about humility is that it helps you keep matters in their proper perspective.

In Romans 12:3 the apostle Paul said this: “For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgement, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned.”

I was shopping a short while ago in one of our retail stores in Wallaceburg.

When I went to pay for my items I noticed that the amount came to a significantly lower price.

I asked the teenage girl at the register if there was some sort of sale that I was not aware of on these products.

“No” she answered.

“I am simply applying your seniors’ discount.”

For the record, I am not yet eligible for the seniors’ discount, so the remark made me smile and say, “Thank-you.”

In my world, cheapness always trumps vanity!

I went home and told my wife, who greatly enjoyed hearing of the young cashier’s error in judgement.

For me, it was a great reminder that it is wise not to think of ourselves more highly than we ought.

As recently as a couple of years ago I was out with my wife and three daughters and a stranger remarked how lovely my four daughters were!

Let me tell you, I heard about that one for quite a while afterward!

My advice to you is to take these things in stride and allow them to remind you to be humble at all times.

So go ahead and take another bite of that humble pie!
