Special air quality statement issued

Environment Canada has issued a special air quality statement in Chatham-Kent, as hot and humid weather conditions are creating elevated pollution levels.

Forecasters say a special air quality statement is in place due to the potential for deteriorating air quality.

“Hot and sunny conditions are expected to cause increasing ground-level ozone concentrations in the area,” Environment Canada officials say.

“Moderate risk AQHI values are expected throughout the day with the potential of short-term high risk AQHI values later this afternoon and early this evening. AQHI values are expected to deteriorate again on Sunday.”

Individuals may experience symptoms such as increased coughing, throat irritation, headaches or shortness of breath, forecasters sat.

“Children, seniors, and those with cardiovascular or lung disease, such as asthma, are especially at risk. Exposure to air pollution is particularly a concern for children, the elderly, and those who have underlying medical conditions such as lung or heart disease.”

Be air aware by turning air conditioners to a higher temperature and turning off lights, computers and other electrical appliances when not in use, forecasters say.
