It was a hot and humid day in Wallaceburg on Sunday, July 1, but the annual Canada Day festivities were deemed a success by the new organizers. Leesa Ervin, a member of the Wallaceburg Centennial Lions Club, says their group received great support from the community. Several vendors were setup at the event, including bouncy castles, food vendors and a photo booth. There was also LIVE music performed on the Canada Day stage and the evening was capped off by a fireworks display.

MPP Monte McNaughton has been named as the new Minister of Infrastructure in Ontario, the first Cabinet position ever for a representative of Lambton-Kent-Middlesex. McNaughton says he was humbled to be sworn in as Minister of Infrastructure. Premier Doug Ford, McNaughton and the other new Ministers joined thousands of people on the front steps of Ontario’s legislature as the new Progressive Conservative government was sworn-in last weekend.

Ground was officially broken for construction this morning for the new $36 million Gateway Casino at the site of the former Wheels Inn on Richmond Street in Chatham. Municipal officials say the 45,000 square foot casino will be completed next August and will create 200 new jobs. One hundred workers from the current Gateway Casino in Dresden will be transferred to the new facility as well.

A 2.3 million-dollar rehabilitation of Dresden’s elevated water tower is almost complete. The tower, which now has a new logo, was unveiled this week. The project was undertaken in January of this year and involved the complete removal and replacement of the interior and exterior coatings of the tank as well as a number of other improvements. The improvements will increase the reliability of the tank as well as its functionality for the next 20 years or more.

At the June 18, 2018, Chatham-Kent Council meeting, members of Council unanimously voted to commit an additional $250,000 towards two existing Community Improvement Plan (CIP) programs. The financial incentive programs help businesses across Chatham-Kent update their buildings and storefronts to further build positive activity in downtowns and commercial areas.

The Chatham-Kent Police Service are still looking for information after a shooting at the Dresden Raceway back in May. As previous released, on Saturday, May 5, 2018 just before 11 p.m. emergency crews responded to a shooting at the Dresden Raceway. The victim, Dwayne McFadden, 58 years of age from Wallaceburg, sustained a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. He was treated and released from a London hospital. Detectives from the Major Crime Unit continue to interview people and follow up on leads in an attempt to determine a possible motive or identify the person responsible.

Incumbent Mayor Randy Hope officially filed his papers this week and is seeking re-election. Hope says he believes his track record and experience make him an excellent candidate for re-election.

Also filing for the position of Mayor this week was Robert Salvatore Powers. Reports say Powers, a Chatham resident, wants to make some positive changes and hold each councilor accountable, even giving the public the right to ‘recall’ elected officials. Hope and Powers join Councillor Darrin Canniff and Alysson Storey in the race to become Chsatham-Kent’s next mayor.

In North Kent, Grande Pointe resident Patricia Sylvain and Pain Court resident Steven Scott have joined the race. They join Joey Cyples and Dylan Robert McLay, who will be vying for one of two spots on Chatham-Kent Council representing Ward 4. Incumbent Councillor Leon Leclair has stated he is not seeking re-election, while Councillor Joe Faas has yet to state his intentions.

In Wallaceburg, Nick Cadotte, Chris Glassford, Aaron Hall, current Councillor Carmen McGregor and Randy McNeil are all vying for two spots representing Ward 5. Councillor Jeff Wesley has stated he is not seeking re-election.
