Bev Shipley, Member of Parliament for Lambton-Kent-Middlesex, announced on the weekend that he will not be running in the next federal election. Shipley was first elected in January 2006 and served his constituents through the 39th, 40th, 41st, and the current 42nd Parliament.

The Otter Creek Wind farm project has changed their engineering plans for their proposed project for north of Wallaceburg. Officials with Boralex said they are no longer planning to use pile foundations for their 12-turbine project. Otter Creek officials said the change will not impact the plans for the project. Reports indicate Otter Creek officials anticipate most of the wind turbine construction to begin in the spring of 2019. The governing PC’s have continuously indicated they plan on halting the project altogether.

A new resident to the community was shocked by the number of obese and morbidly obese people living in Chatham-Kent. In order to tackle the issue, Renee Cormier has launched a ‘healthy living campaign’. Cormier says she’s hoping to engage with various service providers across the community to help create some positive change and give Chatham-Kent a boost.

The Union Gas’ Dawn ‘H’ compressor station in the Township of Dawn-Euphemia is now in-service. The $250 million expansion increases capacity on the Union Gas Dawn-Parkway natural gas transmission system and helps improve operations.

A missing boater was found ‘alive and well’ on Walpole Island after a search and rescue mission on Saturday. Chatham-Kent Police Service officials say on July 7 at approximately 7 pm a 22-year-old Blenheim man took his personal watercraft out on the water. The man did not return and his absence was reported to the OPP. On July 8 his watercraft was located in a marsh area near Walpole Island.

An estimated $30,000 was caused after an early morning blaze on Thursday at a home located at 3097 Dufferin Ave. in Wallaceburg. Chatham-Kent Fire & Emergency Services officials say the cause is undetermined. No one was injured in the blaze.

Medavie EMS Ontario Chatham-Kent and the Municipality of Chatham-Kent have received a number of inquiries from the general public and the media regarding ambulance deployment and operational resources within the municipality. Officials say a report, coming to Council on Monday, calls for additional staffing between 2 p.m. and 2 a.m. and, if approved, will cost the municipality more than $300,000 for the remainder of this year. The expanded service will be included in the Medavie contract through 2021.

With the generous support of community sponsors and partners, all afternoon and evening Open Swims at all municipal pools will offer free admission for the remainder of the summer. Each pool offers afternoon Open Swims every weekday from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m., this includes the Wallaceburg and Dresden pools.

And finally, here’s Dana with an update on the 2018 Chatham-Kent Election…

Morpeth resident Harold Atkinson has filed his papers and is running to become the next Mayor of Chatham-Kent. Atkinson, 55, who works in the agriculture industry, said he’s had enough of city hall and wants to make things better.

He joins current Mayor Randy Hope, Chatham Coun. Darrin Canniff, local advocate Alysson Storey and local resident Robert Powers in the mayoral race.

In North Kent, Patricia Sylvain, Steven Scott, Joey Cyples and Dylan Robert McLay are vying for one of two spots on Chatham-Kent Council representing Ward 4. Incumbent Councillor Leon Leclair has stated he is not seeking re-election, while Councillor Joe Faas has yet to state his intentions.

In Wallaceburg, Nick Cadotte, Chris Glassford, Aaron Hall, current Councillor Carmen McGregor and Randy McNeil are all vying for two spots representing Ward 5. Councillor Jeff Wesley has stated he is not seeking re-election.

Nomination close on Friday, July 27, at 2 p.m.
